30th Annual Loudoun Small Business Awards Finalist Spotlight: Purcellville Flag Company

Thank you to the Purcellville Flag Company for sharing your story with us. Congratulations on being a finalist for the 30th Annual Loudoun Small Business Awards! View all finalists here and event info here.

Tell us the story of your business and how it’s evolved.

Purcellville Flag Co. started as a COVID project. Jason built a wooden flag for their home in Purcellville during the pandemic and resulting shutdowns.

A picture of the completed flag was posted on social media and the post lit up with comments and inquiries about having one made for them and their home.  We made flags for a couple of people and posted pictures on social media of them picking up their flags and received multiple orders from each one of those posts. Jason who was furloughed from his job and his wife Katie who lost her job as a personal trainer as a result of the pandemic found themselves on the cusp of something special.

What started out of their garage as a part-time way to put food on the table now has Jason and Katie working on flags and signs full-time out of a brick-and-mortar just five short miles from home.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your team?

When it comes to our team which is still literally a Mom & Pop business is our ability to work together as a family and a team.  Frequently they are juggling school and sports schedules for their daughter as well as the hard work and dedication it takes to run a successful small business

In what ways do you give back to the Loudoun community?

The biggest way that Purcellville Flag Co. has been able to give back to the Loudoun community is through supporting many non-profits through donations of flags, artwork, and services for auctions, raffles, and employee gifts. Most of the recipients are focused on Military and First Responder efforts.

Additionally, we support as many local small businesses as possible either by purchasing supplies or promoting them on our social media platforms.

What would it mean to you and your business to win a Small Business Award?

Honestly, just to be mentioned as a finalist with so many great small businesses is a huge, humbling honor.  To be selected as a winner of a small business award would be amazing and help us continue to grow as a company and afford us the ability to help more small businesses and nonprofits in our community.

Who is the one person that has influenced you the most in your career?

Both of Jason’s Grandfathers played a huge role in where this business is today.  Jason spent his summers growing up with his Grandfather in Michigan during the summers where the WWII Veteran left a lasting impression of perseverance, manners, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering love of our country.

The term Patriotic Pride still rings true in every flag that leaves the Purcellville Flag Co. shop and that was all thanks to Jason’s Granddad.  His other Grandfather “Pops”, a Vietnam Veteran taught him the importance of doing the right thing and being in the right place as well as helping others.  Jason’s foundation of God, Family, and Country was fortified with Pops living this code and leading by example.

If you’re not in the office, where can we find you/what is another passion you have?

If we’re not in the office, you’ll find us on a field, court, mat, or a sheet of ice.  Our free time is lovingly spent attending and supporting our daughters’ passion for sports.  She plays basketball, swims on the swim team, plays lacrosse and ice hockey, and jujitsu.  We love watching her grow as an athlete, teammate, and leader.

How do you see your business evolving in the next 5 years?

Since we made our first flag in 2020, we’ve been amazed at how this business has evolved, where it’s taken us, and the impacts we’ve been able to make on people’s lives.

In just 3 short years we went from outgrowing our garage shop to working out of a stand-alone shop here in Loudoun County and we’re excited for what’s in store for us.  The end goal is to have Purcellville Flag Co. be a place that employs Veterans and First Responders with a focus on being an outlet for those battling the demons of PTSD.
