The Sterling Playmakers will raise the curtain October 12-22 on Shakespeare in Love, a romantic comedy set in the Bard’s early years. Shakespeare in Love is being performed at the Seneca Ridge Middle School Theatre.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12-13 and Oct. 20-21. There are Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on Oct. 15 and Oct. 22. On Friday, October 13, the performance will be followed by a “talk back” session with Dr. Jennifer Wood, a professor at George Mason University and Managing Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly.
In the year 1593, a younger Will Shakespeare is grappling with writer’s block. Among the many colorful characters in the show is crafty, young Viola, who is secretly pretending to be a man in order to perform on stage. As an actor, Shakespeare wants her on the stage—and as a woman, he wants her to run away with him. For better or worse, this tale of backstage shenanigans and mistaken identity will leave Shakespeare inspired–and audiences smiling.
Shakespeare in Love is a fictional love story based on the 1998 Academy Awards Best Picture winner starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes. The original screenplay was written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard. It was adapted for the stage by Lee Hall in 2014 with music by Paddy Cunneen. It is produced by agreement with Concord Theatricals.
