Black History Month Spotlight: Kevin Watkins, SDL Creative Studios

Thank you Kevin Watkins of SDL Creative Studios for sharing about you and your business!

SDL Creative Studios HeadshotWhere were you born and raised and, if it was someplace else, when and why did you come to Loudoun?

I was born in Kingston, Jamaica.

I moved to Northeast Washington DC at 8 years old. I recently moved to Loudoun County at the beginning of 2024 because it is a great area to live in and raise a family.

Tell us about SDL Creative Studios, and how long you’ve been in your industry.

I have been a photographer and videographer for almost a decade now.

I initially created SDL Creative Studios as a sort of network for creatives to meet and collaborate on projects. Today, SDL Creative Studios is a group of highly experienced and professional photographers, videographers, and actors who create commercials, short films, podcasts, and documentaries.

We also offer additional services such as wedding planning and DJs to enhance the experience at weddings and any event.

SDL Creative Studios Photo 1How did you get into this line of work?

My passion for videography was ignited in my Freshman year of High School when I took a film class.

I took some time away from the camera to pursue a degree in Marketing at the University of Maryland (Go Terps!). I returned to the camera years later when a fellow photographer allowed me to work alongside him on a few projects. This reignited the flame and I have not looked back since.

Have you had any special mentors or inspirations that guided your career?

Anthony Jefferson of Chayce Royals Productions and Danielle Gray of 50 Lens of Gray were both instrumental in guiding me through the beginning of my career.

I’m inspired by all artists who create beautiful images, whether it be via a camera, canvas, clothing, etc. Art is everywhere and I grab inspiration from it all.

SDL Creative Studios Photo 2What is the best part of your job and why?

Meeting and working with clients is the best part of my job. As much as I love to create, it’s the joy that I bring to my clients that keeps me motivated.

I must say that creating the art itself is also just as fun. Having an idea, bringing it to life, and then presenting it to a client who then loves it…there is no better feeling on this planet.

What is it like doing business in Loudoun?

Doing business in Loudoun has been incredible honestly.

Once you become part of this area everyone is connected, friendly, and very helpful. It has been a joy to network and connect with fellow business owners and clients.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time of remembrance and reflection.

The old saying that you must know where you came from to understand where you are going is so true and sums up what BHM means to me very nicely.

Favorite things to do when you are not working?

When I’m not working, I like to hike, play video games (yes, I still play video games), and spend time with my family and friends.
