Tell us about the VA Black Chamber, and how long you’ve been in your industry.

The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce is an organizational hub of empowerment, connection, and support for Black-owned businesses across the state. We not only advocate for the growth and success of established businesses, but we also nurture aspiring entrepreneurs ready to make their mark.

For over five years, I’ve been dedicated to uplifting small businesses and entrepreneurs in this community. My work has been focused on fostering economic development and creating opportunities for Black business owners to thrive.

How did you get into this line of work?

Supporting Black businesses has always been a passion of mine because I’ve seen firsthand the strength, creativity, and resilience within our community. I started my own entrepreneurial path, which gave me the insight to understand both the challenges and rewards of running a business.

Over time, I found myself drawn to building a platform where I could not only share what I’d learned but also connect others to the resources and networks they need to succeed. It truly became a calling, rather than just a career.

Have you had any special mentors or inspirations that guided your career?

Absolutely. My parents and mother, although not an entrepreneur, inspired me from a young age. She taught me the importance of working hard and giving back to your community. Along the way, I’ve been blessed to have mentors who’ve shared their wisdom and encouraged me to keep pushing forward, even when times were tough. Their belief in me is what fuels the belief I try to instill in others every day.

What is the best part of your job and why?

The best part of my job is seeing the growth and success stories of the businesses we’ve supported.

Whether it’s connecting someone to the right funding or making introductions that lead to new opportunities, I love being a part of their wins. Seeing a business owner’s confidence grow as they achieve their goals is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that our work leads to generational wealth and stronger communities makes it all worthwhile.

What is it like doing business in VA?

Virginia has such a vibrant and diverse business ecosystem. The state offers opportunities in so many industries, and there’s a lot of history and culture here that make it a rich place to grow a business.

Of course, like anywhere, there are challenges, especially for Black entrepreneurs, but that’s what makes the work of the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce so critical. We’re here to bridge those gaps and ensure that Black-owned businesses in Virginia don’t just survive—they thrive.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time of reflection and celebration. It’s about honoring the achievements and sacrifices of those who paved the way for us while also recognizing how far we still have to go. For me, it’s a reminder to keep building on their legacy by creating opportunities, amplifying our stories, and continuing to uplift the next generation.

It’s a time not just to look back but also to look forward with hope and determination.

Favorite things to do when you are not working?

When I’m not working, I love spending time with my beautiful wife, Tracey. She is my support system and keeps me grounded and motivated. I also enjoy exploring local businesses, especially restaurants, to connect with the community and discover new flavors. Reading is another passion of mine; it’s my way of getting inspired and recharging. And when I just need to unwind, a facial or trip to the spa for a little self-care time is always my go-to.
