Hispanic Heritage Month: Veronica Duckett

Thank you Veronica Ducket of MAVENTRI for answering our questions for Hispanic Heritage Month!

Where were you born and raised, and if it was someplace else, when and why did you come to Loudoun?

I was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, but I’ve called Loudoun home since 1994 (or was it 1995? That part is a little fuzzy!). We settled in Ashburn, which is where I established my roots. I did move away for a bit, though—took a little detour to South America for a few years. But Loudoun has a way of calling you back, and I returned in 2001, ready to jump back into the community and grow with it.

Veronica DuckettTell us about MAVENTRI and how long you’ve been in your industry.

I’ve been in the industry since 2015, but MAVENTRI’s story starts much earlier. It all began with my mom, who has been in the accounting field for most of her career. She founded MAVENTRI in 2009, and we’ve been a family business ever since. I’m proud to continue the legacy she built—helping small businesses thrive by understanding their financials and streamlining their processes.

How did you get into this line of work?

Well, like I mentioned, it’s a family business! In 2015, I was living in Colorado but was visiting Portland for a job interview. I got the job right on the spot, but on my way back to Colorado, I had a bit of an epiphany. I called my mom from the airport and said, “I want to come home.” And just like that, I got involved in the business right away. Best decision ever!

Have you had any special mentors or inspirations that guided your career?

My mom is the number one mentor in my life. She’s taught me everything I know, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. But along the way, I’ve been lucky to meet so many inspiring women in business. These women taught me that business isn’t just about numbers or deals—it’s about relationships, intuition, and collaboration. They’ve shown me how to lead with compassion while still being assertive, and how to find balance between personal and professional life. There’s a kind of unspoken wisdom among women in business, and every conversation feels like a masterclass in navigating the challenges we face.

What is the best part of your job and why?

The best part of my job? I have to say I really love the operations side of things—there’s something so satisfying about figuring out how all the pieces of a business fit together. And I absolutely love the networking aspect. Meeting new people and nurturing existing relationships really keeps things interesting. Every day is different! But if I’m being completely honest, the best part is working from home and not missing a single moment of my kids growing up. It’s a huge perk that I’m incredibly grateful for.

What is it like doing business in Loudoun/Northern Virginia?

It’s unlike anywhere else! Loudoun has this unique balance of being both fast-paced and laid-back at the same time. People here are driven and hardworking, but there’s also a sense of community and support that makes doing business in Loudoun special. It’s a place where innovation meets tradition, and where small businesses can really thrive thanks to the strong network of local support. Plus, the scenery isn’t bad either!

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on where I come from and what that means for where I’m going. It’s about honoring my roots and the resilience of my ancestors while embracing the opportunities ahead. For me, it’s a reminder of the importance of representation, especially for my kids. I want them to see the strength and beauty in our heritage and understand that their culture is something to be proud of. It’s inspiring to see the contributions Hispanics have made—and continue to make—across so many industries, and it’s a privilege to be part of that story.

Favorite things to do when you are not working?

Do entrepreneurs even get time off? Just kidding (kind of). My absolute favorite thing to do when I’m not working is taking little shopping trips with my kids. Target, Costco, it doesn’t matter—we’re there! It’s such a fun way to spend time with them, and it’s our little tradition. Plus, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good Costco haul?
